WHITE OAK ENCOURAGES MORE DISABLED YOUNGSTERS TO JOIN WEEKLY FUN CLUB

Swanley’s White Oak Leisure Centre is to host a special two-hour session later this month to showcase the work it does with disabled young people through its weekly Fun Club.

Launched earlier this year to provide active pursuits for five to 17-year-olds, their siblings, parents and carers, the sessions have quickly established themselves, but organisers Sencio Community Leisure are now keen to promote greater awareness and to encourage more people to participate when the Fun Club resumes after the summer holidays.

Sencio Community Leisure is also working closely with West Kent Extra’s Boomerang Project which, as part of its remit, also provides activities for young people with disabilities or special educational needs in the Swanley area. Crucially, Boomerang encourages the participation of volunteers to ensure its work, and that of projects such as the Sencio Fun Club, can flourish.

Becky Bowen, Sencio Community Leisure’s disability sports officer, says: “We are absolutely delighted that the weekly Fun Club at White Oak has got off to such a great start. But we want to ensure more disabled youngsters and families in Swanley know what we are doing and what is on offer every week at the centre during school term time.

“These sessions were specially designed to meet the needs of those attending and to provide valuable and fun-based activities for disabled young people within a supportive and encouraging environment. We hope to welcome some new faces to see what we offer and are also keen to encourage – through the Boomerang Project – new volunteers to help us run the weekly sessions.”

The event on July 31 will feature a range of events such as trampolining, soft play and various games designed to show what will be on offer each Tuesday afternoon from September 14. It will take place between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm and spaces – which are limited – can be booked by calling Becky Bowen on 01732 747305.
